How to Log Out of Email on iPhone – Solve Your Tech

Receiving email on your iPhone is a very convenient way to manage your messages. Whether you’re keeping up with personal or work correspondence, having your messages so accessible is often desirable for any smartphone owner.

But many people accumulate multiple email accounts over the years, some of which may end up being used less than others. this can lead to a lot of unwanted emails or spam. If you have an email account on your iPhone that doesn’t receive anything important and you never send messages from that account, then you can log out.

The steps in this guide will show you how to sign out of an email account on your iPhone so you stop receiving new emails in your inbox and so you can’t send emails from the device. We cover these steps briefly at the top of the article, then continue below with additional information and images of the steps.

The steps in this article were performed on an iphone 7 plus, on ios 12.3.1. Please note that these same steps will also work on other Apple devices, such as the iPad.

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your home screen.

step 2: scroll down and choose the passwords & accounts option.

Step 3: Touch the email account you want to stop receiving emails for on your apple device.

Step 4: Tap the button to the right of mail to turn it off.

You will no longer receive emails for that account when there is no green shading around the button, like in the image below.

additional tips

  • this will not delete the account from your iphone or affect your ability to access the account from another device. this will simply remove the account from your mail app and your inbox. if you want to remove the account completely from your iphone, tap the remove account button at the bottom of the menu in step 4 above.
  • you probably have an icloud account on your iphone, which you may or may not be using. you can also disable emails from that account, although the screen will look a little different than a gmail or yahoo account.
  • All of these steps assume you’re trying to sign out of your account. email account in default iphone mail app. if you are using a different email app for your mail, like the gmail app, then these steps will not affect that app.
  • my iphone in the images above is using ios 12.3.1. If you are using an older version of iOS, these steps may be slightly different. for example, you may need to go to the mail menu and select the accounts option there. however, these steps remain the same on newer versions of ios, including ios 14.
  • This will not affect your actual email account. You will still be able to manage your Gmail account through the Google Mail website, or you will still be able to manage your Outlook account through the Microsoft website. it also won’t affect message delivery for any other email clients that sync with this account.
  • If you later decide you want to start receiving your emails in the mail app again, just follow the steps above again, then slide the button to the right of the mail to turn it back on and restore that account to your inbox.
  • you may notice there are a few other options on the screen where you sign out of your mail electronic, such as contacts, calendars, notes or reminders. if those items are also synced to your iphone, you can also disable the setting for them.
  • following these steps will also work on other iphone models, such as iphone x or iphone 6s.
  • on older versions of ios there may not be an “accounts & passwords option” prompt. instead you need to choose the “mail, contacts, calendars” option, then choose an account and disable the mail option there.
