usps package select ground is one of the least expensive but slowest usps services offered. If a definite delivery date or schedule is not required, ground package selection is a cost-effective way to ship. national delivery takes an average of 2 to 8 business days, but this method does not come with a guarantee. delivery times may vary and may be delayed. like most other usps shipping methods now, select usps ground shipping rates for packages are determined by weight and distance based on the area the package travels. Although this method comes with a free delivery confirmation, there is an additional fee for insurance, adult signature, and signature confirmation.

Maximum weight for select pitches is 70 lbs. pieces exceeding 108 inches, but not exceeding 130 inches in length and girth combined, may be mailed at the oversized package price for the area to which they are addressed. those exceeding the maximum size allowed may be subject to a surcharge. for packages larger than one cubic foot, dimensional weight will also apply.

when should i use usps parcel picker ground, if at all?
To answer this question, you’ll want to be sure to compare USPS Package Pick Ground rates to other applicable shipping methods. in the case of shipping items that need to be shipped ground, such as restricted items, it may be your only option. Compared to Priority Mail, even with USPS Parcel Select Ground Rates reduced this year, the cost difference may not make up for the short turnaround time, more guaranteed delivery window, and reliability general priority mail. the only area where you see a major difference is packets going to zone 9. for example:
- Zones 1-8: Selecting packages can save you about $0.15, about $5 per package, in some cases it’s not worth losing the benefits priority mail offers to merchants.
- zone 9 (and some heavier in zone 8) – zone 9 and some in the heavier range of zone 8 are the main areas where traders would see a lot of savings. That said, it’s not often that merchants ship to Zone 9 locations, so this may be a moot point.
for example, the cost difference using usps package selection vs. priority mail for a 50 pound package:
- go to zone 7: -$2.00
- go to zone 8: -$6.03
- go to zone 9: -$95.01
however, more often than not, you won’t find enough savings beyond priority mail to justify missing out on the many benefits that are usually worth paying a few cents more for.
That said, you should weigh the options of slower delivery, no guaranteed window, and using ground versus air shipping. the ground inherently opens up the opportunity for more jolts, bounces, and pack shoves. it may not be worth the extra risk, but it’s an option in the right situation.
