The benefits of new gaming platforms are better graphics, bigger games, and new animations galore. However, there are some things that players miss about older systems.
One important thing is drivers. Even 20 years after its introduction, the GameCube controller is still what fans want to play.
Benefits of using a Gamecube controller on different platforms
Fans find that the GameCube controller is exceptionally ergonomic. They praise the position and size of its buttons. Two bumpers with two noticeably different sensibilities is another thing that gets people excited. Although other controllers have come on the market since then, they don’t appeal to people in the same way that the GameCube controller did.
Using the Controller Cross-Platform
You can’t just plug in a driver and make it work on any system. For the most part, you don’t have to worry about finding drivers for GameCube controllers. Instead, the problem with GameCube controllers is finding an adapter that works for your system.
In some cases, the driver cannot be used on the platform. It doesn’t have the correct drivers, and people have not been able or allowed to create drivers and software to connect the GameCube to specific devices.
Using a Gamecube Controller on Different Platforms
There is more than one platform where people prefer GameCube controllers. Setting it up means preparing for the needs of the specific system you want to play on.
Remember that you don’t have to use a GameCube controller for everything once you’re plugged in. You can use it for nostalgic old favorites, and use a modern controller for more modern games.
PC, Switch, Wii, and Mac
To connect your controller GameCube to a PC, Switch, Wii, or Mac, you’ll need to get an adapter. Consider this one from CLOUDREAM which may work for any of these devices.
MS Windows
Even if you choose a different adapter, you configure it like this.
- Connect the controller to the adapter.
- Connect the adapter to your PC. You must connect via USB.
- Search for “Device Manager” in the Windows search bar.
- Click “Device Manager”.
- Right-click your computer name.
- Select “Scan for hardware changes”.
- Let the computer update if it finds one.
Since the adapters are plug- and-play, you shouldn’t have to start searching for programs. However, some people who have had difficulty getting their PC to run a GameCube controller use Zadig for driver support.
Mac
Some people have found that you need to disable system integrity permissions to make your Mac find the adapter. This has often been experienced by those using the Dolphin emulator.
- Hold down the Command R key while starting your Mac.
- Choose “Utilities” and open Terminal .
- Type “csrutil disabled”.
- Reboot. Once the computer is on, go to Terminal.
- Type the following commands in Terminal.
- sudo cp -r ~/Downloads/SmashEnabler.kext Library/Extensions/SmashEnabler .kext
- sudo chown -R root:wheel /Library/Extensions/SmashEnabler.kext
- sudo touch /Library/Extensions
- sudo reboot
- The adapter should now recognize the driver. Check to make sure it does.
- Reboot the computer and hold down Command R as it reboots.
- Choose “Utilities” and open Terminal.
- Type “csrutil enable”.
Configuring the driver on your macOS may seem daunting at first because it’s more complicated than the other options. However, it shouldn’t take more than a few minutes for to work.
Steam
Once you’ve connected your controller to your PC, you need to adjust your Steam settings to make sure it recognizes your controller.
- Click “Steam” and then select “Settings”.
- Select “Controller” and then “General Controller Settings”
- Check “Generic Gamepad Settings Support “.
- Click on the detected driver to make sure the program recognizes it.
Steam recommends the Mayflash Controller Adapter.
Switch
For Switch, you have to look for a controller once you plug it in. Simply plugging in the controller may not appear to have a GameCube controller attached. .
- Connect the adapter to the Nintendo Switch.It should be connected to 2 USB ports.
- Connect the GameCube controller to the adapter.
- Click “Drivers” in the Start menu.
- Click ” Browse for Drivers” and then click the USB driver icon.
- Press the left and right buttons. The driver should be activated.
Sometimes the driver for The GameCube is automatically detected. In this case, you won’t have to go through this process.
Please note that the GameCube controller will not have the same options as regular Switch joycons. It may not work well on all games because of this.
Wii
Although you can use the adapter if you want extra distance, the Wii also supports the GameCube controller natively.
- Open the top of the Wii.
- Connect the Ga controller meCube to the Wii.
- Insert the GameCube memory cards you want to use into the card slots.
- Insert a GameCube game into the machine.
At this point, you should be able to play on your Wii with the GameCube controller.
Playstation
Although there was once a PS2 to GameCube adapter, it is no longer available. Current PlayStation consoles do not work with the GameCube adapter.
Xbox
You can’t use a GameCube controller on an Xbox. There is no current program that is still in service or an adapter that works.
Android
For Android, you can use a Mayflash controller adapter and OTG cable to connect the GameCube to your phone to play.
- Connect the controller to the adapter.
- Connect the OTG cable to the Android device.
- Connect the adapter to the OTG cable.
You should be able to use the GameCube controller in games that it is now compatible with.
iOS
A Twitter user managed to make his iPhone use a GameCube controller using the GBros 8-bit adapter. As he explains, he connected the adapter to his phone and the controller to the adapter.
He also used the nControl jailbreak system. So you can’t do this on the phone without jailbreaking. It may not be worth it even if you play with a GameCube controller.
As you can see, not all systems have a perfect setup with a GameCube controller. However, there’s still no reason to get rid of your old driver. There are still plenty of uses for it in your modern game setup.
