imap advantage over pop

imap or internet message access protocol can also be used instead of pop. imap and pop are email protocols that allow you to read your emails in third party applications like outlook, thunderbird, etc.

while zoho mail supports both imap and pop, imap has more advantages over the pop method.

pop can only be used from a single device.

one-way communication:

  • emails are retrieved from the server without any additional synchronization between server and client.
  • the read/unread status of emails is not maintained.
  • actions performed on emails (delete, move, etc.) are reflected only in that particular client.

two-way communication:

  • Emails are constantly synced back and forth between the server and various email clients.
  • read/unread status of emails is maintained.
  • actions performed on emails (delete, move, etc.) are reflected across all devices.

Emails are downloaded and deleted from the server unless the “keep a copy on the server” option is provided.
