ringo starr just announced a new album, titled Give More Love, on his 77th birthday today (July 7). He introduces his old friend Paul McCartney as a guest and has been marked by widespread love around the world on his special day, but Ringo isn’t always so accommodating. Let’s rewind the years to 2008, when the drummer finally got tired of the fan mail. The former Beatle and former voice of Thomas the Tank Engine posted a video saying that he was too busy to deal with the massive amount of memorabilia arriving at Starr Towers with requests from the great man’s signature. the artist formerly known as richard starkey mbe, issued this stern warning: “this is a serious message to everyone watching my update right now, peace and love, peace and love. I want to tell you, please, after October 20, do not send fan mail to any address you have. “Nothing will be signed after October 20. if that has the date on the envelope, it will be discarded. I warn you, with peace and love, I have a lot to do. “so no more fan mail. thank you thank you – and there are no objects to sign. any. in short, peace and love peace and love.”
richie was a little taken aback by the hilarity and response to the clip, which seemed to echo the moment in the simpsons when marge simpson finally gets a response to the letter she sent to the beatles more than 30 years ago. his former bandmate paul mccartney said of the video: “you got the love ringo. he was the one, if the fans came to his door he would just say ‘piss off’. he would say ‘this is my private life’.”
In a statement, ringo’s “people” clarified the story, saying it was about “reducing their carbon footprint”: “This message was not directed at the ‘real fans’ and after more than 45 years of signing we know you will understand ringo has always signed articles and in fact he is the only beatle who has been doing so. ringo also firmly believes that it is a waste of paper and that we all need to be mindful of our carbon footprint.”
