photo ID requirements

State law requires Kansas voters to show photo identification when they cast their vote in person. The following documents may be used to meet the photo ID requirements for voting:

  • driver’s license or identification card issued by kansas or another state
  • u.s. passport
  • united states military ID
  • identification card issued by a Native American tribe
  • employee badge or identification issued by a government office
  • student identification card from a kansas accredited post-secondary educational institution
  • concealed carry license issued by kansas or another state
  • public assistance identification card issued by an office of the government

There are exemptions from the photo identification requirements for: permanent early voters (voters with illnesses or disabilities); military and overseas voters and their spouses and dependents; and voter with religious objections who signs a declaration of religious objections (form dro (Spanish)). Voters age 65 and older can use an expired photo ID.

early voting – in person

kansas allows voters to vote early in person at county election offices or satellite polling places up to 20 days before an election. for the 2022 election, counties can begin early in-person voting on July 13 for the primary election and October 19 for the general election. the deadline for early voting in person is 12:00 p.m. August 1, 2022 for the primary election and 12:00 p.m. November 7, 2022 for the general election. Voters are encouraged to contact their local election office to confirm early voting dates and locations for their respective counties. the secretary of state’s office will also provide this information in July and October prior to each election.

People who vote in person at the county election office or satellite location must show photo identification. If an early voter does not provide identification, or if the information is invalid, the county elections official may issue a provisional ballot to the voter. the provisional ballot will not be considered valid until the voter presents his or her photo ID for county canvassing.
