google workspace (formerly g suite) offers its customers an outdated read receipt in gmail format that is very similar to outlook in the 1990s, with a concept and technology that is difficult to understand. work with, and not reliable. also it is not available for gmail users. the best option, which we’ll show you later, is to use an extension like mailtrack for gmail to see if someone has read your mail.

the free version of gmail does not allow you to request a read receipt. the stale read receipt in gmail settings is only available on accounts under a google workspace administrator, which are typically school or work accounts, which not everyone has. You’ll get an email notification when the recipient opens your email. But as we explain here, this type of read receipt is unnatural and not reliable. It does not offer the natural and fluid approach we’re all used to in messaging apps on our smartphones.
why it’s not appropriate to use gmail’s deprecated read receipt
