How to create a zip file from a cd

Note: Starting with WinZip 26.0, you will NOT find the New Zip Archive on CD/DVD option. If you have everything you need, you can simply put your recordable CD or DVD in the drive, make sure it’s formatted, and then select it as a save location.

Creating new Zip files on CD or DVD

WinZip® can create new Zip files (.zip or .zipx) directly on CD or DVD. New Zip files written to CD or DVD can span multiple CD/DVDs if necessary.

To create a new Zip file on CD/DVD if you are using the WinZip Ribbon interface, click New Zip file in the CD/DVD option of the File menu. This displays a dialog box with the following options:

• CD or DVD drive – If you have more than one CD/DVD burner installed on your computer, you can choose which drive to use.
• Zip File Name: Type the name you would like to use for the new Zip file. Do not include a drive letter or folder name in the Zip file name.
• Write Speed: Choose Fastest, Medium , or Slower as the speed you want WinZip to use when writing the Zip file to the CD or DVD drive.

  Faster is the fastest speed supported by your CD or DVD drive for media that you load into the drive. Similarly, Slowest will give you the slowest supported speed, and Medium a speed that falls somewhere between the two extremes.

  As long as it works reliably, it’s generally best to select Fasttest. However, if you experience crashes on the faster speed setting, you may have better luck choosing one of the slower speeds. When the drive spins at a slower speed, the laser used to write data to the CD has more time to record each individual point and this can help reduce or eliminate failures.

About writing to CD/DVDs

To write to CD/DVDs, WinZip first creates the new Zip file (or an individual part of the new Zip file) in the File Folder. WinZip work. Once the Zip file (or part of the Zip file) has been created, WinZip will write it to a CD or DVD.

This preparation process is necessary because of the way writing hardware works of CD/DVDs. It also requires that you have enough disk space available in your working folder to store the prepared Zip files.

If the menu entry does not appear

If New zip file on CD or DVD does not appear in WinZip’s File menu and you are using Windows XP or later, you may be running WinZip from a user account with privileges limited. This situation can be corrected as follows:

1. Log on the computer with an administrator account or have a system administrator log on.
2. Open the policies Windows Security:
   1. Click Start, then Run.
   2. Type SECPOL.MSC > and click OK.
3. Open Security Options under Local Policies .
4. Look for Restrict CD-ROM access to locally logged on users only. Double-click the option and change its setting to Enabled.

Limitations

• Files Compressed files written to CD or DVD are read-only and cannot be updated at a later date. Also, due to restrictions imposed by the file system used on CDs and DVDs, the maximum length of a Zip file name to be written to a CD or DVD is 107 characters. WinZip currently supports the following media: CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, and Blu-ray.
• WinZip will only create a Zip file on a single CD or DVD. If you insert a rewritable CD with existing data, WinZip will ask if you want to erase the existing data before proceeding to write the new Zip file. If you choose to continue using the CD in question, you will not be able to recover any data that has been erased.
