Templates are a collection of sections that are set up to give your online store a consistent look and feel. The sections that are available in your templates depend on your theme. In the theme editor, you can discover which templates apply to which pages, and then edit them to customize the information displayed to your customers.
Editing a template applies your changes to every page you use that page template. . For example, if you add a newsletter signup form to a collection template, all collection pages that use the default collection template now display the newsletter signup form.
You can have up to 1,000 templates in total.
Edit Templates
You can edit your templates to add sections to your online store. Some sections allow you to add blocks that can be further customized, but not all sections or blocks have settings or content that can be edited. When you edit your templates, your changes are displayed in real time in the theme preview window.
Note
If you have a screen that is larger than 1600 pixels wide and the window of your browser is fully expanded, or your browser window is expanded to at least 1600 pixels wide, then you will see two sidebars. The left sidebar contains the navigation panel and the right sidebar contains the settings panel.
Steps:
- Select the template you want to edit from the Dropdown Menu.
- Click + Add Section, and then select a new section for your template.
- Click on the new section to see its settings and options.
- Make your changes to the section or to the blocks within it.
- When you are satisfied with your section, click Save.
Create a new template
Note
Creating a new template is only available for Online Store 2.0.
Some types of templates can be used to display multiple pages using your store’s resources. These types of templates include:
- collections
- products
- blogs
- blog posts
- pages
All themes come with a default template for each type. This default template is what resources use if you don’t have an alternate template explicitly configured.
Any change you make to a template will affect all pages that use that template. If you want to display some of those pages differently, you can create a new template based on one that already exists in your theme. When you create a new template from an existing template, the new template is automatically populated with the same sections, which you can then edit to remove, add, or hide sections as needed without affecting the display of other templates of that type.
Steps:
- Use the dropdown menu to select a template. Click + Create template.
- Give your template a unique name.
- Using the dropdown menu, select which existing template you want to base your new template on.
- Click Create Template.
