Students demonstrating expected and unexpected behaviors are not a new concept. Now, however, there is the unique layer of students who are more isolated which has led to less social interaction for students since March 2020. As a result, districts, schools, and classrooms are faced with the constant challenge of tracking the behavior and find a system. to meet the unique needs of all 25 students.
Understanding Behavior Management
Focusing on behavior management is a top priority for many educators and administration.
Several factors affect student behavior, including creating a robust behavior management system. A behavior management system includes:
- Teachers and school administrators create a list of expected and unexpected behaviors for students and staff, display the list for reference, and review expectations for behavior consistently throughout the year
- Teachers consistently praise expected behaviors, which increases the likelihood that the behavior will continue.
- Teachers identify how to consistently respond to disruptive behavior.
- Administrators and teachers collaborate to establish a school-wide behavior management system and behavior tracking template
Behavior tracking in Google Forms
One resource to help monitor student behavior is Google Forms. As you’re probably familiar with, Google Forms is a free and easy-to-use tool that can be shared with the educational team and parents.
Google Forms can be created as Behavior Rubric examples for all-school behavior. class. monitoring or individual needs of students. The forms can be used to collect data when a student has a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) and/or an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) with behavior goals.
Google Forms can be customized with multiple ways to answer a question: multiple choice, checkboxes, dropdown, short answer or paragraph answer, or linear scale. Questions can be marked as required and the form can be saved to a student’s device for multiple teachers to use the same behavior tracking system (if the student rotates among many teachers throughout the day).

This particular form was used for a student in 7th grade. At the end of class, when a behavior incident occurred, teachers filled out the form with the student. The student and teacher would discuss the answers which provided real time feedback.
All teachers on the education team had access to the response page and could see if the student had a challenging class earlier in the day, which could affect their behavior in the current class.
Google Form organizes responses in a chart/graph format that can be included in weekly updates for staff, parents, and students, as well as within goal updates if the student has an IEP.

Educational teams also have the option to view Google Form responses in a Google Sheet document. The spreadsheet can be shared with the educational team, parents and students. Notifications can be added to receive daily or real-time reports from the behavior tracking sheet. These updates can be linked to weekly student incentives both at school and at home.

- Identify your preference: “Notify me when changes are made or a user submits a form”

Successful behavior management with Google tools
There are several factors to increase the likelihood of success with behavior tracking sheets:
- Include students in the process by having discussions open. Ask students to reflect on their daily behavior, how often they display expected and unexpected behavior.
- Create the behavior tracking form with the student, ask them to choose a motivating image to include on the form , and/or change the color to make it one of their favorites.
- Include a system of rewards or incentives in the classroom for them to work, ask students to identify what motivates them or what they want to work on to earn.
- Set weekly and long-term goals to ensure students have a schedule to work against.
- Share regular updates with the educational team to increase form completion to Throughout the School Day
