I live at gmail – I have to if I want to keep up with contacts, check the latest chrome os commits, follow up on bug reports and read helpful tips , friends. send daily!

but that’s a lot of information to digest. So to help me stay on top of things, I use gmail’s desktop notifications.

These handy pop-ups appear on my desktop the moment a new message arrives in my inbox. With a quick glance I can see if it needs immediate attention or if it will stay until I have more time to attend to it.

In short: I think they’re really useful, and in this post I’m going to show you how you can enable them too.

enable gmail desktop notifications

The best part of this tip is that you don’t need to install any kind of fancy desktop application, panel applet, or browser plugin to receive new mail notifications. gmail has a built in option for this, all you have to do is turn it on!

  1. open gmail in google chrome
  2. click the gear icon on the top right and select ‘see all settings’
  3. on the tab “general”, scroll down to ‘desktop notifications’
  4. click the link “click here to enable desktop notifications for gmail”
  5. click “allow” to see notifications

with desktop notifications enabled, you can choose one of the three listed notification options:

  • new mail notifications: see alerts for all messages arriving in your main inbox
  • important mail notifications: only see email alerts marked as ‘important’
  • mail notifications off: don’t show any email alerts

when you’re done, make sure you scroll to the bottom of the page and hit the ‘save changes‘ button to save your settings, don’t close the tab!

now every time gmail is open in chrome, you will see notifications of new emails, depending on your settings.

when gmail notifications arrive from chrome, clicking on a notification will open the mail in gmail, in a new tab. You can also choose to ignore the notifications, and they will disappear from the screen after a few seconds.
