This guide explains how to create a custom email address by signing up for Google Workspace from your Squarespace site.

before we start

  • Make sure you meet the eligibility requirements.
  • Only site owners and contributors with admin permissions can sign up for google workspace through a squarespace site.
  • The domain you use can’t include special characters, like ü, é, or ñ.
  • You can only register one google workspace account per squarespace site, even if you have multiple custom domains.
  • en it is not possible to simultaneously register a google workspace account on a squarespace domain and a squarespace subdomain. you can only choose one. alternatively, consider adding a user alias domain or secondary domain.
  • make sure your home page is enabled and not hidden behind a page password.
  • configure your site as public from the site’s availability dashboard. you can set it back to private or password protected once the google workspace setup is complete.

step 1: prepare your domain

To sign up for Google Workspace, your Squarespace site’s domain must be set up correctly. note that you can:

  • sign up for google workspace using any domain connected to your site, be it your main domain or another domain.
  • verify any of the domains after signing up for your google workspace account.

The steps you’ll take to prepare your domain depend on whether you purchased your domain from squarespace or from a third-party domain host:

domains of square spaces

if you have a squarespace domain:

  • make sure you have verified ownership of your domain.
  • confirm that your domain subscription is active.
  • confirm that your domain uses the default dns records of our website.

third party domains

if your domain is hosted by a third party:

  • Confirm that you have properly configured your dns records to connect your custom domain to squarespace.
  • Records added to the host end of your domain may take up to 72 hours to propagate.

step 2: register and buy your account

  1. From the start menu, click settings and then google workspace. if you are using a parking page, click email on the home menu.
  2. click monthly > or annual billing plan. It is not possible to switch to a different Google Workspace billing plan after creating your account.
  3. On the registration page, enter your information in the following fields:
  4. email address

    • first name – your first name
    • last name – your last name
    • username : follow google’s naming guidelines. usernames can use letters (a-z), numbers (0-9), hyphens (-), underscores (_), apostrophes (‘), and periods (.). As you type in this field, your full email address appears.
    • domain : This field is automatically populated with your primary domain. if you have more than one domain, use the dropdown menu to select a different domain for your email address.
    • new email address – Shows a preview of your new google workspace email

    contact information

    • personal email – Replace email@example.com with an email address you already use. for example, a personal @gmail or @yahoo email address. do not enter the new google workspace you are creating.
    • organization: If you don’t have an organization name, enter your name.
    • country: select your country from the dropdown menu.
    • zip code: if your country does not use a zip code, leave this field empty. If “invalid zip code” appears, your zip code is not in the correct format. confirm your zip code is correct, then re-enter it.
    1. Review your information, then click save and continue.
    2. In the next panel, add your credit card information. To avoid failure, use a card that does not have 3D security features. click save and continue.
    3. review the order and terms of service, then click confirm and buy.

    A message appears confirming that your account registration is being processed. click go to google workspace to return to the google workspace dashboard.

    The email address you created has admin permissions on google workspace. To learn more about the admin feature, visit the google documentation.

    step 3: find your temporary password in your current email address

    1. look in your inbox for the email address you entered when you signed up for google workspace. We will send you an email with your temporary password. the email subject is welcome to google workspace. if the email does not appear, please check your spam folder.
    2. in the email, click the sign in to email button.

    please note:

    • google also sends a welcome email that does not include a temporary password. you can ignore this email as you need squarespace’s welcome email to complete the registration process.
    • if you added a new user, the subject line of the welcome email is invitation email from google workspace.

    resend your google workspace welcome email

    If your welcome email is not in your inbox or spam folder, you can resend it:

    1. From the start menu, click settings, then click google workspace.
    2. click google workspace user you created.
    3. click send invitation or reset password.

    step 4: sign in and agree to google’s terms of service

    1. Sign in with the temporary password and new email address you created. if you’re already signed in to another google workspace or gmail account, first choose add account and then sign in.
    2. follow google’s prompts to create your own password and Accept the Google Workspace Terms of Service.
    3. You’ll be taken to the new Google Workspace Admin Console to verify your domain.

    step 5: verify your google workspace domain

    When you access your google workspace admin console for the first time, google may ask you to verify your domain using its settings admin console at the top of the management console dashboard. this is a security measure to ensure that no one else uses your domain with google workspace.

    If you don’t see this message in your google admin console, open the google workspace configuration tool and verify your domain. For more information on how to verify your google workspace domain with squarespace, follow the google documentation.

    step 6: add mx records

    google workspace requires mail exchange (mx) records to send and receive email in your inbox. The steps you need to take to add these records depend on whether the domain you’re using for Google Workspace is a squarespace domain or a third-party domain.

    domains of square spaces

    If you create a google workspace account with a squarespace domain, mx records are automatically generated in your domain’s dns records. To make sure the records were added, visit add google workspace mx records.

    third party domains

    If you registered your domain through a third party such as godaddy or hover, you will receive an email with instructions on how to add mx records to your domain’s dns settings. this step is required to receive emails to your google workspace email addresses.

    next steps

    after completing these steps, you will be ready to use your google workspace account. you now have an email address for your custom domain. from here, you can:

    • sign in to google workspace and start sending and receiving email.
    • update the settings on your site to connect your new email address to contact forms and email notifications .
    • add more users/email addresses to your subscription from the google workspace dashboard.
    • manage your billing settings and view invoices from the billing dashboard.
    • expand your online presence by sending personalized email campaigns from your personalized email address.

    troubleshooting

    When signing in to Google Workspace, you may encounter error messages.
