Mozilla thunderbird mail client fails to connect to the gmail server

This issue started last night, and has continued today. I am intermittantly getting a “Add Security Exception” pop-up window, the Location is pop.gmail.com:995. Whether I click on “Conrirm Security Exception” or “Cancel”, it keeps popping up.Any one else having this issue and find a solution? Thanks, Paul

I figured out the solution. Go to Tools/Account Settings and Server Settings for each email address you have. Under Security Settings, change from SSL/TLS to None. My anti-virus is Avast and it was causing the problem. Since I change the Security Settings, I”m not having this issue anymore.

Turning off SSL/ TLS might prevent the problem but it introduces another … perhaps a worse one … of making ALL your emails far less secure. SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer and is what keeps your email from being publicly viewed in many situations. The other suggestion of turning off Avast”s email scanning might also work but again … is the cure worse than the problem? AV scanning of email is pretty important it seems to me.I haven”t solved the problem yet but it seems to be because of the interaction of AVAST ver 8 and Thunderbird email. I think it stems from how Avast used to handle the SSL scanning issue before ver 8 that has now changed with 8. (In the older version Avast could not scan SSL protected emails unless SSL was turned off in the mail client and there were exceptions created in AVAST that turned on SSL there but now it does not need to do it that way) I think in the upgrade process the problem 8 is retaining some of its previous SSL add on exceptions that it should not have. In Ver 8, if you go to Mail Shield and Settings and then SSL Scanning I think you will see those SSL accounts listed and at the bottom this message, “Disabling SSL/TLS in your mail client and creating SSL accounts her is no longer needed. You should re-enable SSL/TLD in your mail client and delete the accounts here”But my varioius gmail accounts already have SSL turned on in Tbird so I am confused by that instruction and as I personally have a lot of gmail SSL accounts I am too nervous about deleting the SSL Scanning settings in AVAST without confirmation of that being the problem. Perhaps the popup problem comes from having SSL turned on in both Tbird and Avast or perhaps Gmail is involved in some way (all my accounts are gmail) but I can”t afford at the moment to possibly kill all my email by experimenting. For the moment, I stopped the “Add Security Exception” pop up loop by killing Tbird process & relaunching. Tbird is working again with out the pop up but I suspect, if I don”t change something in Avast, at some point it will get confused again and the “add security exception” popup loop will return again as it did before.I am looking for confirmation of the real solution to getting Avast 8 to scan gmail SSL accounts as it should without popups.Anybody know anything more about the above?will greatly appreciate your help,db
