parents – here is health and pleasure for your boys and girls

the ‘irish mail’ car is the only form of outdoor exercise for children that keeps them healthy.

It is worth more than any medicine or ‘tonic’ on earth, because it is a perfectly natural method of forcing fresh, clean air into the lungs.

helps digestion, calms the nerves, reddens the blood, and develops the strength and regularity of the action of the heart.

arms, hands, wrists, shoulders, legs, ankles, back, and chest are evenly developed through the constant back-and-forth “wiring” motion required to propel the Irish mail.

no tension anywhere, no overexertion of the legs at the expense of the chest, arms or back, as with the tricycle.

the fastest of all the children’s cars, because it is equipped, but it cannot tip over, since it is built very low to the ground.

Made of selected steel and walnut: simple, durable (not a “toy car”), with no complex parts that can break or go unrepaired, it will last for years with reasonable use.

tired as rubber, smooth, quiet, safe, easy to handle – the Irish Post works without the stressful mess of the velocipede or the wagon.

so get an irish mail today and get them on the road to perfect health. their bright eyes, rosy cheeks and well-developed little bodies will be your best reward.

the ‘irish mail’ children’s pedal car was developed from an early pre-bicycle style of locomotion. Railways, introduced in the mid-nineteenth century, revolutionized society by offering cheap travel. not only were local people now able to visit other areas safely and quickly, but industry also had the means to transport goods cheaply and quickly. rural areas particularly benefited.

In addition to a regular train service provided by locomotives, small individual railcars were built, to carry one or two operators, mainly for track inspection or to transport engineers to repair the tracks when necessary. early models were geared, with a large lever used for propulsion. these machines were also used to transport mail in rural areas. After the introduction of the velocipede in 1869, rail vehicles were also built as three-wheel or four-track pedal bicycles (you can see my 1898 teetor rail velocipede further down the page).

It is believed that with the influx of Irish immigrants to the US. In the US, the name “Irish Post” was attached to the junior version of the gear-driven carriage that became popular around the world in the late 19th century. it was promoted not only as a toy, but as a means of healthy exercise for children. using one certainly strengthens the upper body rather than just the legs like with a bike or trike, and such machines are still made today for adults just for that purpose (see link at bottom of page) .

The ‘Irish Post’ captured the popular imagination in the United States, and this style of toy became a ‘must have’ for children from 1900 onwards. Much like derby cars and go-karts later in the century, kids didn’t just use them when they were young, they built their own versions as they grew into teenagers and raced against each other.

‘holiday items’ was one of many retail outlets selling the ‘irish mail’ handcar. they offered four versions, the 27″ long ‘junior’, two larger versions, 31″ and 40″ long, and a 45″ long two-seater. the ‘junior’ had larger front wheels than the others to aid stability.

This 90 year old example has survived intact except for two common repairs, a ‘seat’ and a replacement handlebar (both original style).

After World War II, “Irish Post” evolved to reflect teenage interest in hot rods. With the sleek lines of its metal bodywork and “big and small” wheels that gave it a rake, Garton’s speedster was the most popular version. While kids growing up before the war learned to ride the Irish Post, the dream car for the younger baby boomer generation was the Sprinter.
