No one likes to drink water from a shallow pie pan, but pie pans do come in handy for occasional baking. If you need to fill a pie pan with liquid without any measuring device on hand, you can use the following simple formula:
There are 8 cups in 1 gallon, so 32 oz is equal to 2 gallons. Dividing by 8 gets you 2 cups.
In other words, 32 oz of water is equal to 2 US pints or 1/2 a US gallon. This should be enough for a standard 9×13″ cake pan filled to the top with batter. If you also need a crust, increase the recipe by half again and suit yourself as to whether you need a second pie pan.
