How to reset Google profile photo & revert to default color background

new updates are being added at the end of this story…

The original story (published on November 14, 2020) is as follows:

Google has kept the option to reset gmail/google account profile picture in a small secret submenu, and users are unaware of its existence.

The result is a lot of complaints from users who just want to restore their profile picture to the default alphabet with a colored background, but can’t.

As is clear from the comments above, users could easily reset their profile picture before google plus was deprecated. however post its off, the option is extremely hard to find.

If you are one of the users facing this problem, don’t worry because you will easily reset it via this link.

just go to basic info > profile picture and press the “delete” button. then you’ll see your image revert to the original alphabet in a colored background look almost immediately.

It’s quite strange that google has hidden this option within several subsequent menus.

for reference, you will have to click on avatar (upper right corner) > manage your google account > personal information > go to about me (scroll down on the personal information page) > profile picture > delete, if you want to do the same directly.

And what could be the reason behind such a move? it seems that google is simply trying to discourage users from using the default avatar.

google sets an image to display using the first letter of its name (obviously), but the background color is not up to the user. is assigned randomly.

However, several users have continued to demand the ability to set custom backgrounds. Google is unlikely to add such a feature, but you can try the following solution for now.

1) open word. 2) change your page color to the background you want. 3) then set the font size to 150 and the font type to ‘ariel’ and the color to white. write the alphabet you want. 4) then take a screenshot, crop it and set it as your profile. source

and that’s all for now. also be sure to check out our similar story where some users are encouraging holiday-themed versions of google app icons here.

We have found some more workarounds shared by users that may help resolve the issue. here is the first one:

1. go to manage your google account 2. select “people & share” on the left side 3. click “about me” 4. click “profile picture” 5. then you can see “delete”, click it and your profile picture will be back to default

This is what worked for another user:

Go to your google.com and click on your account picture, it will say manage google account, click on that. then click personal information also on the left. scroll to the bottom and click go to about me and click on your image. must have options. and just edit it from there

and here’s the last one:

go to album archive, click on profile pictures and then on profile pictures again. click on each photo present, go to the 3 dots in the upper right corner and delete it. after deleting them all go to about me and you should see the default profile picture. (it may take a few days for the image to update everywhere)
